cornflower, (Centaurea cyanus), also called bachelor’s button, herbaceous annual plant of the Asteraceae family. Native to Europe, cornflowers are widely cultivated in North America as garden plants and have naturalized as an invasive species in some areas outside of their native range. They were once frequent weeds in fields of corn and other grains, hence their common name. They are commonly used as a fresh or dried flower in bouquets.
